  1. This sounds interesting…but it this part of a series where it would be better to start with a previous book?

I always like new FUN things to read (and Sci-Fi/Fantasy are enjoyable as a break from some of the heavy political stuff I follow via blogging and reading.)

    1. Yes, Eric is part of the Discworld series. Though many of these books are stand alone, Eric is a continuation of The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, and Sourcery.

  2. I used to play the Contra bass for the Riversiders Brooklyn NY. I still attend some finals. Give me a holla if you were a member also,

    1. Was that band, by any chance, established by Sister Thomas Marie of the Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Trinity? I am writing her biography and would like information about the band.

    2. What ‘s going on Steve fellow alumni 1969 – 1971 Alvin Watts Drum line tenor 69 – 70 Triple Bass 1971 ( or as Bobby Winslow would call it Tim Tom Trio).Hint 234.Through the years have been in contact with my battery mate Malcom D. also Tenor and Triple bass(whoops he also marched in 72 double tenor).Don’t know how many of us are still around. I have made comments on U Tube 1968 and 1971 Riversiders my only response was from Malcom due to us losing touch for a short period.Would love to hear from any who are still out there.Hope all is well.Hey we knew each other before the Riversiders but the experience will always be cherished.

  3. Just stopped by to say Hello. Born and raised in Rittman living CA for 25 years. Nice website. Also a great fan of PZ’s. Best to ya

  4. Hey,
I was in the Riversiders from Brooklyn New York and we were in competition with the Warriors and a few other corps that never beat us:-) I was looking for anyone in the New York area thats willing to help start up a drum and bugle corp or who may know what ever happen to Billy Gordon (Director of the Riversiders)or anyone from the Riversiders. If any one knows or is interested holla!

  5. my heart is beating so fast, i’ve finally found my old drum corp. i was in the ridgeman from 69′-71…in fact i was the frist black in the all male winter guard.( remember?). i also played contra bass & baritone, and double tenor..i live upstate in catskill,ny and still play now and then. i’m currently getting ready to start a jr drum corp here and would apperciate any help with equipment for my kids…thx!

  6. its a sunday here and im always listening to your songs all, i have widowed so many of your songs but there;s only one that i can;t play it same as the melodic form of your fingers in “Dreams We dreamt together” I really so in love with this song of all u played. I’v gone to your concerts here in the philippines in Cebeu. hope u still remember in cebu plaza ballroom before and i let you sign in my book, your songs that you compiled which i bought.

  7. I was in the Riversiders on the drum line (base drum, concert cymbals, small kettle). Also was drum major (riefly) along with my brother Alexander. I try to stay abreast of drum corps info and competitions. I know alot of us are not around any more, but maybe a reunion of some sorts can be put together. I often see our old director (the postman who lived in queens). Anyway, drop a line and May God Bless You!

  8. Heh. The quote caught my eye while surfing the STLBloggers site. Great (awful) film. You know there will be a live stage version of it in St. Louis soon?

  9. Hello from Alaska,

My name is Rick Shea, I found your emails while looking on the web for old recordings. I’m sorry I do not remember your names but you probably do not remember mine either. I am 1 of 4 brothers (Jim, Mike, Me, and Will) we all marched in both the Cleveland Caballeros and the Buckeye State Cabs after the merger from 72′ to 77′. I played the baritone, my brothers Jim played soprano, Mike played all over the drum line, and Will played cymbals. I still have old buttons, programs, ticket stubs and many old pictures and great memories. I recently retired from the Air Force after many years of traveling and setteled here in Alaska. Last summer I searched the web and bought 3 CDs

1973 U.S. Open (Marion, OH) Vol 1 Cleveland Cabs
1977 American International Open (Butler, PA) Vol 1 and 2 Buckeye State Cabs

I also bought a great Hawthore Muchachos CD on the eBay.
Funny how literally hundreds of thousands of kids like us were in Drum Corps but seldom do you run into people who have any idea what you’re talking about. Many years ago while stationed at the AF Academy in Colorado I found a DCI championship on a cable channel and watched every minute – it was very different from our time period. I won’t bug you anymore – check http://www.drumcorpsworld.com for the CD’s above, they might still have them. Good luck and good talking to you

    1. I don’t remember you, but I was friends with Barb and Linda Bayt. We all belonged to the Caballeros in the mid-70’s. Your brother Jim was a good friend of Barb and Linda’s brother, Tom. I miss those days!

  10. Hey all former Mello-Dears out there, would love to hear from you. I played contra-bass for the female green machine from 1976-1979, with a repeat in 1983. I live in JACKSONVILLE Fl, and I married my sweetie from 76’s/Gauchos.

  11. Played snare drum with Lawmen and Statenaires in late 60’s greater N.y.circut. Great friends and music, Enjoyed Skyliners and Blessed Sac to name a few…Those were the days my friend!!

  12. I marched with Mello-Dears from 1970 to 1975. I played Mellophone. Anyone out there that remembers me? Best years of my life! Met so many good friends, and went so many places. GREAT TIMES!

  13. Greetings All,

Hey, I marched in the C.M.C.C. Warriors drumline in the 70’s, even though my brother Poo, and I are from Brooklyn!

Hey, by some of the stuff I read on this site I have something that might be of importance to you. Me and mant others from the days have indeed started a drum & bugle corps, and you may want in as you might even know some of the people involved.

The name of the corps is: Network we have instruments, and stuff galore! If you’re seriously interested in becoming apart of the network write me an email for more details.

  15. Looking for former members of the Buckeye State Caballaros. I was a member from 1976 – 1979 and instructor from 1983 – 1984. Hope to hear from you!!!

    1. I remember you! You were on the rifle line. My name is Susan (Woff, now Piper) I was the “adopted ” daughter of Mary Ellen Bayt. Friend of Barb and Linda Bayt. Loved the years I spent with the Caballeros in the mid-70’s

  16. Good Omen’s is one of the better works of fantasy to come out the genre in a while. All the more fitting in these crazy Bushian times of “the latter years”. If you decide a taste of Gaiman makes you want more, try “American Gods” or “The Anansi Boys”.

  17. Actually, Good Omen’s is not part of Discworld.

Anyway, last week, just before reading this post, my partner and I drove 22 hours from Minnesota to DC. Without a CD player, we bought another copy of GO (most GO fans have two or more copies, I’ve found) and read it to each other on the drive. Good times.

    1. I don’t think anyone said it was part of the Discworld series (The comments were actually referring to Eric, which was listed here a long time ago).

  18. Hello my name is Alana i marched with Sky Ryders in 86 and 88. I have a ton of pics that i will post soon on the Sky Ryders website, but if anyone has pics of those years please let me know. Any fellow drumline or colorguard members from those years holla back please……..

  19. I march with the Riversiders before they took the Riversiders. We use to learn fundimentals drumming, bugling and marching at Saint Ann’s Church by the Farragut Housing Projects. We would move outside over by the warehouses on front st. I belive, that just happend to be in eye site of the east RIVER. Management asked the members to come up with a name. A young lady in the color gaurd came up with The Riversiders. We soon relocated from the church to Dr. White’s Catholic Community Center (It was brand spanking new.) In our first M&M contest wich was in The Garden State Drum & Bugle Corp Circuit. When our score and name was announced first we jumped for joy, not realizing we where in dead last place. 🙂 LOL Oh the good old days. We between last and third that year. The next year, there was a new Corp in town “The Riversiders” Now we where championship material. What life changing events lay ahead of us. We beat up on corps in our circuit including the powerful Bayone Bridgemen. It took them to stop us from being circuit champs two years running. They where the only Corp to beat us in the circuit that year. Have to go now but to all my buddies in the drumline
On Snare Drum: Echo(Des.), Double 0, Dennis and me Mike Morris. David, Clarence, Fluff on base, the Jive Five Cymbal section, the Magnificent Tenor Drum section, the Big Sound Horn Section, The Color Gaurd that had more snap then the crack of a whip, Dr. & Sister Watkins, Billy Borden, John Chalmus, Bobby Winslow all the parents who cared, We were the Corp that could. It ended all too soon. I miss you all. Mike Morris. Snare Drummer ’65-68

    1. yo mike…what’s good….just to give u an idea of who i am ….me and frog use to hang…then we added donald clayton (dust) johnny smith…i played soprano….and i still have the sketches of leather jackets u designed for me..my brother ronald and harold bascomb use to hang ….let me know if u remember any of us…..by the way went to the fort greene-farragut reunion 8/17/2013 saw some other members of the original riversiders….

  20. Marched with CMCC Warriors D&B (Hornline Baritone) in the 70’s, was also involved with the Cadet corps in drill team competition and pledged to the 21st line of the Pen & Scroll Military Fraternity. It was a wonderful time and an experience I will never forget. This really goes out to MR. Burgie and Papa D, may they rest in peace.

  21. Also pledged Pen & Scroll. 16th Line. Your name sounds familiar Allen, but can’t place the face. Often think back on those days and how that organization molded me. Good luck to you.

    1. Hey Kevin, it’s Frank Kibble 20th line. What’s up hope all is well. I just punched in Pen and Scroll and ended up here. Have you seen or heard from Frank Beal? What happened to the Scroll?

  22. I marched with the Monarchs. I remember competing against the Riversiders in the early 70s, Wow they had a fun show. My son is now in the HS band, bringing back all of those wonderful memories. It’s so expensive now. I couldn’t have afforded it when I was a kid.

  23. Looking back at the fun years playing a snare drum with a little known corp “Jersey Cyclones” from Matawan New Jersey. We did a few years in the Greater New York Circuit …. 62′, 63′ and 64. We placed 3’rd a few times in the circuit. Talk about pride …. What a fun time. Started practicing briefly with SAC and even marched in a parade with them once. Got drafted and that was that.

  24. I WAS IN THE CORPS IN THE BEGINNING OF IT TO 1968..THE CLEVELAND CABALLEROS, WE WENT FROM DRUM AND BATON TO DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS. ANYONE OUT THERE THIS OLD???

  45. I was a member of the Owego Mello Dears and trying to figure out what years! I just came across some old pics in the green uniform with the white billowing sleeves. Long white knee highs. I remember joining a little bit before a long bus ride from Owego down to FL, where we marched in a parade in Walt Disney World. The memories coming back of the heat and the bugs! All those hot practice days in a field! Is any of this ringing a bell with anyone out there? I only have these couple pictures for some reason, and boy the memories came back! I would love to add the correct or approx. dates that this took place. I know it would have had to have been mid to late 70’s at least. I am not sure how long the Mello Dears lasted, have been trying to get info off google, but no luck. Would like to put a little info in my scrapbook if anyone has any! Thanks so much!

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

That was alot of hard work but well worth it. Our biggest rivals were Fantasia. I remember many times we would tie with them. There was a time where we not considerd a Jr. Corp anymore. We actually qaulified for DCI, and believe it or not the whole corp was EXCITED but the corp Director did not want to go through with it. If anyone here remembers the VFW Nationals let me know. 82. I am wondering who made the entry back in October 2007 about playing snare for the Jersey Cyclones of Matawan. (They were actually from Keyport, not Matawan.) It was by someone named Bob. I, too, played in the Cyclones snare line during the 1963 season and then joined the snare line for the BS Golden Knights. I played with them from late 1963 until 1966. This other Bob said he came to SAC (I assume BSGK) and marched in a parade. I don’t remember that, but it was a lot of years ago. If that other Bob is still out there and reading this would you please respond? I am really curious.

    Thanks!

    Bob Love

  83. This is for Bob Love from the Jersey Cyclones. Myself and Bob Dixon of Woodbridge played snare for the Cyclones in 62, 63 …. I left and started practicing with BS in the winter of 63 ~ 64 however, I was drafted the summer of 64. Did a couple tours in VN, got out and went to school. Jerry Montamuoro and Ronnie Brennon got me to the Knights.

  84. I was just trying to find some life on here. I marched with the C.M.C.C Warriors from 81-83 And prior to that I was in their training program the braves in summer academy of 80

  87. Shouting out to all the Riversiders. This is Carl, 2nd Baritone from Streamliners ’68
to Riversiders ’69-’71. The things we achieved in the Riversiders stand forever. People, women and marriages come and go but I loved the corps with my whole heart.
Don, James (snare),Cheryl (Rifle) and I even taught a 3rd corp after River 2.
To John Chalums and Don Vanscoy, I was always proud to play your music and march in your line. After my father, you’re the two most important and pivotol men in my life. I’ll never forget you. I’ll never forget corps and what we did. I still sing Laredo, Mission Impossible, Sunny, Lucretia McEvil, Ecstasy Of Gold, Hang Em High, Camelot, Slaves and Wild Wild West.
Still working in publishing in NYC. Hey Steven Hendrix., and Leonardo (Hurc).

I was one of two kids from Bridgeport, Ct. who marched with the corps from 1971 to ’72 and part of ’73 while you were drum major. I remember Glen Dixon, Wayne Gray and little John and Pete on snare. Tommy, Ira, And Steve on triples. I played rudimental bass and later cymbals. Bruce Bousquet was the soprano player who was also from Bridgeport. I remember marching in The canadian open and coming in 4th. I remember John Shatzel cutting his forehead with the sabre during reheasals for the finals.Great to see you’re still out there. Do you know where I can find a recording of any of the shows for those seasons?

  97. I followed the Indians from 1966-1971 . I became a fan when I visited my uncle Steve Nekos in Kingston where I was born. His sons Steve and Eddie were both in Corp. nice to see alot of people still fowwow corp Thanks for the memories .

  99. Hey Tony and all you old members of the Buckeye State Cabellaros!! I marched in the guard inthe 1978 & 1979 seasons before heading to the Bluecoats. My sister Shawn, did too!

  100. OMG Jim! I checked out the pics and I am in both the Cabellaros and Bluecoats pics! I can remember taking those photos! I have tears in my eyes! What memories. I forgot you went to Bluecoats too, but now I remember! Thanks……

  101. My brothers Calvin, Donald, and Ted( The clayton brothers) and I Claude were in Dr White original Riversiders Drum Corps.. Anyone want to talk remininse, email me at Clayton@Dim.com

  102. Just wanted to say hello Jim and glad we connected on FB. It was good watching drum corp this year. Canton Blue Coats had an amazing show. they are on the move up and soon will be the best in the land. Have you run into any former Buckeye State Caballeros from say 1977-80?

  103. Yeah, just to inform you, you spelt Organization on UK Lottery Organisation. And these people have tried to scam me about five times before. I’m thirteen, will they never get the point?

  104. Just looking at Buckeye State Cabalaros on the net and Tom came accross this – it is great to hear about old friends – too bad drum corps here did not survive – Tom & I marched from 74 – 77 then again in 79. We came across Rick Shea, we were wondering what ever happpened to him, good memories and great to find out he is in Alaska and was in the Air Force. The merger in 76 was the best thing that could have happened to our Drum Corps – too bad it didn’t keep the Drum Corps going here in Cleveland – would love to have a reunion. Hello to everyone we marched with – Tom Pappas and Patty Burke Pappas

  105. hey hey hey high ya doin mark watts speking i marched with caballarose coler guard from 1977-1979. had the best time of my life from there i marched with cavalerse and madason scouts coler guard. hey toni how the hell are ya lookinig for pic and DVD or video of our 1979 show miss uall my email markwatts61@yahoo.com. I also know were our drum major Dave White is peace. 🙂

  106. Rick Shea checking in again: I last wrote on here in Feb 07′(entry #7) thought I was talking to an old Caballero I found by accident – had no idea my entry would be out there/on this site. Some how the Drum & Bugle seed inside me sprouts from time to time and while on the youtube site yesterday I started hunting for Drum Corps and specifically The Cleveland Caballeros and the Buckeye State Caballeros. 🙁 No videos, but I found this site and my old message by accident – WOW the internet saves eveything. A BIG long overdue Hello to Tom Pappas and Patty Burke Pappas 🙂 Last time I saw you guys I was like 16 yrs old, now the 50 yr old Father of 3 and Grandfather of 4. If you guys are like me I guess you won’t see this message, perhaps never if you don’t look on this site like I almost didn’t but if you ever do, feel free to drop a line to me rnj16feb@gmail.com. I have some old Drum Corps stuff and pics from the Cabs and as the internet seems VOID of any stuff about our Corps maybe my son can help me load a few things. Seems the Eddleman family were the keepers of the organization but no one has loaded anything that I can find. Always felt if we had stayed in the “A” Class the 1st yr after the merger we would have CLEANED HOUSE everywhere we went and paved the road for “Open” Class but it was not to be. Oh well – I raise a toast to all old Cleveland Caballeros and the Buckeye State Caballeros Drum Corps members where ever you are.

  110. Devon Marlon Waugh of The New York Lancers from 1981 – 1985. I really enjoyed those years of my life. And I especially enjoyed all the competitors. Fantasia 3, Cranford Patriots, St. Ignatius, CMCC Warriors, PAL Windjammers, LI Grenadiers and all the drum corps that competed against us. I missed those days. I wish I could replay them and just keep rewinding them. So I am looking forward to talking to former members of drum corps. Peace
