Atheists often run their ignorant mouths about how smart scientists are, and how stupid us the religious clergy are concerning the origins of the universe.
“Dr.” Michael E. Schmidt is using a straw man argument here. Atheists really don’t care what clergy say about the origins of the universe. What one does observe is that scientists (many of whom are religious) will argue that creationists have nothing of value to say about the origins of the universe.
It was Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître , a Catholic Priest who came up with the theory of the big bang, and who also first proposed that the universe is expanding.
It’s somewhat disingenuous (or ignorant) to bring up Fr. Georges Lemaître and the big bang without mentioning he was also a theoretical physicist. Fr. Lemaître proposed the big bang theory (he initially referred to it the “hypothesis of the primeval atom”) while applying Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity to cosmology.
It should be noted people familiar with general relativity, cosmology and the history of science are well aware of Fr. Lemaître and his background. There’s no conspiracy suppressing this information.
Also, it’s ironic “Dr.” Schmidt is using Fr. Lemaître to make his point because Fr. Lemaître was opposed to mixing science with religion.
