Neil Gaiman‘s American Gods Coming To HBO:
Man, when you Google “American Gods” you get all kinds of fan-casting for Neil Gaiman’s novel, which actually celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Adventures in Google aside, The Hollywood Reporter had a chat with Tom Hanks’ producing partner (under his Playtone Company banner), Gary Goetzman, who dropped some intriguing tidbits about the upcoming American Gods series which will be landing on HBO sometime in 2013 or beyond.
Gaiman will be acting as writer and executive producer to the series, which brings to life his novel transplanting a variety of gods and pan-theistic figures into the modern-day U.S. where their influence has waned because man no longer believes in them. The main character of the novel is Shadow, an ex-con turned bodyguard for the mysterious confidence man, Mr. Wednesday, and together, the duo crosses the country meeting Wednesday’s friends and associates for reasons that are only gradually revealed. The 480-page story is being pitched as a six-season series, with about 10-12 episodes per season.
The Playtone Company was behind Hanks’ first directorial effort, That Thing You Do, as well as several films starring the actor, and is most notable for its TV work, including Band of Brothers and its followup, The Pacific. They know how to do good TV, but for the moment, I’m I’m not sure how they’re going to wring six years worth of story out of what was a pretty compact novel.
